Privacy Policy
Effective Date: August 5, 2026
1. Introduction
Sunset Technologies Inc. ("we," "our," or "us") is a Nevada-registered company. This Privacy Policy explains what we collect, why, who we share it with, and how you can get rid of it.
It covers the Sunset iOS app — films to watch with an AI companion that talks with you about them — and this website (sunset.video). Sunset is no longer offered as a web application; the app is the only way to use the Service.
By using the Service you consent to the practices described here. If you do not agree with them, please do not use the Service.
2. Information We Collect
Account
- Sign in with Apple — we receive the identifier Apple assigns you and an email address. If you choose Apple's "Hide My Email," we only ever see the relay address, never your real one.
- Email sign-in link — on platforms where Sign in with Apple is not available, we use your email address to send you a one-time sign-in link.
What you tell the app about yourself
- Your display name, and the name, voice and color you give your companion
- The companion personality and talkativeness you pick
- Your device's time zone, so notifications arrive at a sensible hour
How you use the app
- Which films you open, how far you watched, and where you left off
- Session timestamps and duration, and playback actions (play, pause, seek)
- Ratings you give to the companion's remarks
- Device model, operating system version and app version
- Your IP address, which our servers necessarily see when your app connects. We use it to operate and secure the Service, and it lets us infer your country — not your precise location.
Your conversations with the companion
- Messages. What you type or say to the companion, and what it says back, is stored with your account so the conversation stays coherent across sessions.
- Memory. The Service automatically extracts short facts from your own messages — tastes, opinions, things you mentioned — and stores them so the companion remembers you next time. It is built from what you said, not from what the companion said.
Voice
- Speaking to the companion. Speech is transcribed by Apple's built-in speech recognition on your device. Depending on your device and language, Apple may process the audio on its servers under Apple's privacy policy. We receive only the resulting text — the audio recording is never sent to us.
- The companion speaking. The companion's replies are turned into audio by a speech provider. Your own voice is not used to do this.
Notifications
- If you allow notifications, we store the push token Apple issues for your device so we can send them. Declining costs you nothing else in the app.
Feedback
- If the app asks how you like Sunset, we store your star rating and, if you choose to write one, your comment. Comments reach a private internal channel so we actually read them.
This website
- If you submit your email on this site, we store it in a spreadsheet along with the technical context of the submission — browser user agent, language, screen size, time zone, referring page, and any campaign parameters in the link you arrived from.
- This site loads the Meta pixel, which records page views and taps on the app-install buttons, and reads and writes cookies for that purpose. The app-download page also reads the country your request comes from, to point you at the App Store or at the beta.
3. How We Use It
- Run the Service: sign you in, stream films, keep your place, hold a conversation
- Personalize the companion — its memory of you is the point of the product
- Send the notifications you allowed, and the occasional email about your account
- Understand which parts of the app people use, in aggregate, and fix what breaks
- Measure whether our advertising works (see section 6)
- Detect and prevent abuse, and comply with the law
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use your conversations to advertise to you.
4. AI Processing
To answer you, we send the relevant part of your conversation — your messages, the companion's earlier replies, the stored memory described above, and what is happening in the film — to the AI providers listed in section 5. They process it to generate a reply and return it to us.
The companion is a fiction and its remarks are entertainment. It can be wrong. Do not treat what it says as factual, professional or medical advice, and please do not tell it anything you would not want stored — see section 7 for how to delete it.
5. Third-Party Services
We share data with the following providers, each for a specific purpose:
- Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and xAI — generate the companion's replies, and extract the memory described in section 2
- ElevenLabs — turns the companion's replies into speech
- Cloudflare — hosts and delivers the films
- Apple — Sign in with Apple, push notification delivery, speech recognition, and the App Store rating prompt
- PostHog — product analytics. Your account identifier and email address are attached to these events.
- Sentry — crash and error reports, which include device and app state
- Resend — sends our emails
- Meta — advertising measurement (see section 6)
- Google — stores this website's email submissions in a spreadsheet
Each of them has its own privacy policy governing what it does with the data. We encourage you to read them.
6. Advertising and Tracking
We advertise the app, and we measure whether those ads work. The app reports a small number of milestone events to Meta — that it was installed, that onboarding finished, that a film was started, and two engagement milestones. These say what happened, never what you watched or said.
On iOS, the app asks your permission before any of this is linked to you. That prompt is Apple's App Tracking Transparency dialog, and it appears once, at launch.
If you grant it, the app enables your device's advertising identifier for Meta, and sends Meta your email address so it can match these events to your account. The address is hashed on your device before it leaves — Meta receives the hash, not the address itself.
If you decline, neither happens: no advertising identifier, no email. The app works exactly the same. You can change your answer at any time in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking.
Apple's SKAdNetwork may also report an install to Meta in a form Apple designs to prevent identifying you individually. That happens at the operating-system level, not in our code.
7. Data Retention and Deletion
We keep your account data — profile, memory, conversations, watch progress — for as long as your account exists. Records of how much AI capacity your sessions consumed are kept for 30 days and then deleted automatically.
You can delete your account from inside the app, under Account. Deleting it removes your profile, your companion's memory of you, your conversations, your watch history and your notification tokens. If you signed in with Apple, we also tell Apple to revoke the authorization. Deletion is permanent and we cannot undo it.
Some records may survive in backups for a limited period, or where the law requires us to keep them.
8. Your Rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:
- Access — get a copy of the personal data we hold about you
- Correction — have inaccurate data corrected
- Deletion — have your data erased (see section 7 for the fastest route)
- Portability — receive your data in a portable format
- Objection — object to certain processing, including analytics
To exercise any of these, email hello@sunset.video. We will not treat you differently for asking.
9. Security
We use appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect your information against unauthorized access, alteration, disclosure or destruction. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
10. International Transfers
We operate from the United States and our providers are located in the United States and elsewhere. Using the Service means your information is transferred to and processed in countries whose data protection laws may differ from those where you live.
11. Children's Privacy
The Service is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child under 13 has given us information, contact us and we will delete it.
12. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy. We will post the new version on this page and update the Effective Date above. Continuing to use the Service after a change means you accept it.
